It was doing the Navrun for the very first time.
On the 2nd day after running for about 2 km, I couldn’t run. I slowed down. Then walked some of the distance. Then suddenly I remembered something and I was running again.
What did I remember?
Well, coming up shortly…

Hi everyone. I am Amit Chilka. I am a 10X Success Coach. I catalyse peak performance for individuals and organisations. Welcome to the second episode of my video series Run to your Peak : 9 peak performance lessons from my barefoot Navrun.
So, as I slowed down and had begun to walk, I was thinking will I be able to do it? It’s just the 2nd day and I am really feeling tired.
Of course, it was all in the mind. But how do you get your mind to change the negative thoughts to change into positive ones and force it to focus on your betterment?
Visualising the peak a.k.a. the outcome is the key.
All I remembered that time was – I had challenged myself for running 9 km consistently for 9 days. It wasn’t a race nor was it about the timing. It was about the consistency!
All I had to do was not focus on the speed but completing the 9 km run consecutively for 9 days! And that would be my win.
Visualising your peak gives you clarity.
This clarity gives you the courage and the confidence to perform at your peak.
I have had multiple such instances in the past.
One of them was when about 10 years back I had taken up a challenge to lead a 27 member team to trek to the Everest Base Camp. The 3rd day of the trek was a steep climb. It was tiring. On the 4th day when we set afoot, the soreness from the previous day’s walk still prevailed. But then something magical happened. After walking a short distance, we got the first glimpse of the mighty Mt. Evererst. It was surreal. And all our fatigue just disappeared. We kept walking for next 8 days to reach the base camp. Not that it wasn’t tiring. We just had the clarity of what we had signed up for!
In another instance, I had registered for a marathon. And just the day before the run, I wasn’t keeping well. I had cold cough & fever. I thought I wont be able to run. When I woke up in the morning, I was still unsure if I should do it. Again that day, I visualised what I had signed up for. The sight of me flaunting the finisher medal at the end of the run was good to sit at home. I ran the marathon to have one of the best experiences of my life.
So you see, when you know what your peak looks like, it is easy to keep going despite the odds.
And that is what I want you to take away today – in real life too, we need to have a clarity on what our peak looks like.
Visualise your peak!
